Behind the Song
Victor Alexeeff

Victor Alexeeff is a prodigy who began studying piano at age four and attended the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, beginning at age seven. Although renowned for his performances of Chopin and Prokofiev, his musical interests are eclectic. Besides working as a concert pianist and session player, he composes scores for film and television, produces original albums, and performs with experimental music groups and rock bands.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! different, imaginative, futuristic Imagine if Beethoven or Bach could visit the 21st century. Instead of dozens of instruments to make sounds, they would have millions. What would their compositions sound like? Beethoven and Bach were the rock stars in their centuries and the instruments they composed with is what was available during their times. Today, with the power of computers and electronics, there is no limit to the sounds you can create. The album Classics Unleased is an exciting experiment on the vast possible interpretations. Having been in rock bands, together with my classical background it seemed like an obvious project to produce.
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else? Tell us why: My favorite part of being an artist is probably to create music out of thin air and then share it with fans and play live -- because connecting with the audience is what it's all about!
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you? Being in a recording studio is like entering a spaceship. It's a tech playhouse and it is where the magic is realized.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
When I'm not doing music, I enjoy chilling with my cats, discovering a new dish to cook, reading, or hiking.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why? There are so many. But right now I can only think of Spock when he rocked it out on The Enterprise (original Star Trek).
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it? The most emotional song I've written is yet to be released. It is about a young girl who dreams of being a star and being famous only to have her dreams shattered by slimy Hollywood producers.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
I am working on new material right now and it is a similar type of project to "Classics Unleashed". Hopefully, this will be out before Christmas this year.
