Samona

A Contemporary Gospel luminary and singer-songwriter, Samona, originally from Oakland, CA, and raised in Sacramento, CA, stands at the intersection of heartfelt spirituality and innovative musical expression. Guided by her profound relationship with God, Samona weaves a tapestry of soulful, honest, and distinctly different melodies that serve as a vessel for her perspectives and stories. With an overarching ambition encapsulated in her latest EP, "Encouraged To Inspire," Samona draws inspiration from the richness of Gospel tradition, influenced by legends such as Mississippi Mass Choir, Daryl Coley, John P. Kee, and Kirk Whalum, alongside a blend of Opera and Classical influences. Her music is a testament to the fearless creativity of the new wave of musicians, bringing a fresh perspective to the Contemporary Gospel genre. Join us as we delve into the artistic journey of Samona, exploring her passion for recording, the emotional depth of her songwriting, and the anticipation of her upcoming releases in 2024. For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it? Soulful, honest, and different. What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else? Tell us why. I love the creative process of recording and bringing a song to life. I also love to make meaningful lyrics that will inspire and give people hope. Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you? I love being in the recording studio. Its like carefully choosing the colors that you would like to paint with. Picking vocal textures, notes, and lyrics is a careful process that I do not take lightly.

Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing? I love to be with my family. We go on adventures and do new things together to create memories that will last Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why? My favorite singers are: Bilal, Dorinda Clark Cole, James Moore, John P. Kee, Daryl Coley, and Alex Isley. I love how free they are in their expressions. I love their tone, grit, and how gifted they are musically.

Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it? "Come Into This Room", however, it is not out yet. It comes from my childhood memory of being an 8 year old child who was concerned who spoke to God while everyone was sleeping at night. I thought well, Lord you can come into my room while people are sleeping and we can talk:). I had a genuine care for the Lord and I wrote about it in a song.

Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year? I have a lot of new material that will be released in 2024. I have been recording at the Sound Kitchen Studios and the Omni Studio in Nashville, TN with the awesome Mr. Billy Smiley!
