Behind the Song
McKenna Camille

McKenna Camille Born and raised in Oregon, McKenna has always loved performing, but it wasn't until middle school that her journey as an artist began. Struggling with anxiety, OCD, and depression at such a young age, McKenna now uses those times as a catalyst for her music career, turning those experiences into powerful songs such as her hit Bad One, which discusses anxiety and bullying. This up-and-coming young artist's carefree, fun side can be heard in her summer hit Strawberry Shortcake. Not just a singer/songwriter, McKenna is studying acting at the prestigious Tisch School of Dramatic Arts at NYU and is well on her way to a successful career. Growing up on a lake, McKenna is an expert in all water sports and was a member of the show/trick water skiing team, Portland Spectacular. When not working, writing music, or volunteering, she enjoys playing golf, tennis, and spending time on the water or in nature.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
Funky, crazy, weirdness
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.
I write songs pretty much every day and it is super therapeutic for me, but it doesn't even compare to actually recording the music in the studio. I love the recording process and just singing my songs in the booth is the coolest experience I've ever had. it's incredibly fun and I'm absolutely obsessed with how each song changes so much from the demo stage to the final product. my favorite part is the opportunity to add like little ad-libs and layers or "secrets" into songs that maybe a listener won't even notice, but I know are there and are incredibly obvious to me.
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
My first time going into the recording studio I was so nervous, practically terrified. now that I have gone several times, I absolutely love it and it is a very wholesome experience for me. I love working with my team at NiMusic, I always have such an extremely fun time singing in the booth and ad-libbing and messing up 100 times. the studio is such an incredibly creative space and the second I walk into the studio I am like the best version of myself.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I do quite a lot when I'm not doing music. for starters I'm currently a full-time college student at NYU Tisch, which takes up an insane amount of my time, but aside from school, I spend most of my time outside. I love going on walks, working out, playing golf, water skiing, swimming, pretty much any outdoor activity I will participate in. I just love adventuring and trying new things and I really have too many hobbies to name. I am also a content creator on Instagram and TikTok and I share all my adventures and silliness on those platforms.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
There are so many women doing incredible work in the music industry today. Lyrically I really look up to Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McRae, and Benee. I have looked up to Billie Eilish and Selena Gomez for years now while they have been speaking out about mental health and of course, my absolute idol, Miley Cyrus.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
"Who do you admire most" Well, I haven't actually released it yet, it is on my next ep, but I will still tell you a little about it. This song is about losing yourself because you are trying to be something different for every person around you. It is about not knowing who you are anymore and having this incredible struggle because you don't like who people around you want you to be. It is a very angry and emotional song that I am incredibly excited about. It really encompasses who I want to be as a musician.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
Yes, I just released a new song on June 1st and have another song coming on July 7th, along with multiple music videos coming this summer. My first EP will be out in August and then in the fall, I will have a swarm of new music and music videos coming out. The release of my second EP is also on the calendar and I am so excited for people to hear it.
