Juha Jyrkäs is a Finnish musical pioneer, who has replaced an electric guitar and bass with electric kantele and bass kantele in a metal album, first to do so a in a world. Kantele is an ancient Finnish string-instrument. He is also a talented fantasy and horror writer in Finland. Jyrkäs wrote Finnish lyrics to folk metal band Korpiklaani between the years 2006-2012. His previous bands are Poropetra and Tevana3. Since the spring 2008, Jyrkäs has played many solo gigs in Finland, Estonia and in Hungary. Sydämeni kuusipuulle is the debute album of Jyrkäs. No electric guitars, bass, keyboards or drums used on this album. The result is still the real pagan heavy metal! The lyrics are about Finnish mythology, nature mysticism, occultism, human feelings and sex. It was first published at year 2019 with a limited MC edition, but in the year 2020 Italian label Earth And Sky Productions re-published it first digitally then, at 12.2.2021 as a CD.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
Luminous. Powerful. Unique.
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.
Definitely performing. I love on being stage and give my energy to the audience and get it back from them. I miss live gigs so much!
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
Recording studio is also a place where I like to be. In there I can actually see what kind of direction the song eventually takes. After a studio session I often go to sauna and watch some action movie or two.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy also writing since I'm also an author. To create a good story is something I enjoy very much.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
There's no specific character I'd admire, but I appreciate very much all underdog musician who struggle to get their music through, but eventually find themselves from the top.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
The song Honkajuurella asunto from my debute solo album Sydämeni kuusipuulle was very emotional, since it was about painful childhood memories and about childhood's end. Many things and memories packed in one music piece.
Listen to the song here!
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
I'm writing some new material. Let's hope everything goes well with it. I also want to jump on the stage immediately as the pandemic is over.
