Jessica Woodlee

Jessica is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist possessing a 3-octave range. Jessica filled her life with music from the start – studying and playing guitar since the age of 6 while also taking voice lessons, learning piano, violin and auditioning for Broadway. Driven by her passion for music she then taught herself the ukulele, electric bass, and recently upright bass. At age 18 this powerhouse is just getting started. For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!

Emotive, driving and addictive. For me, music is like an open diary. My lyrics are authentic and vulnerable. I love sharing a piece of my life with the listener. I grew up listening to pretty much everything. As a result, my music is full of bluesy guitar, modern synths and classic rock drums to create a unique pop sound.

What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.

I love being able to reach people with my music. Whether it's through a speaker or live on stage I love being able to share my experiences with others. It's the best feeling in the world when someone tells me, "that song really helped me feel less alone". In the end, that's what it's all about...the connection.

Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?

I love getting to realize my artistic vision in the studio. I normally start production by creating demos in my home studio, laying out all the basic parts and ideas in ProTools. When I take my demos to the studio I fall in love with my music all over again. There's nothing more satisfying than putting the pieces together and hearing what I created in my head out loud for the first time. It's the most exciting feeling when a song finally grooves.

Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?

I love spending time with my family and friends, and of course my dog, Rey. I'm a big fan of movies and books. I love rewatching my favorite movies like The Princess Bride, Star Wars IV and Ferris Buller. I'm a big fan of reading fantasy like Name of the Wind. I also love going on adventures with my friends like trying out new types of foods or a day at the beach.

Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?

I love the broadening inclusion in the music industry. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely still a long way to go but every day more and more women, people of color, and AAPI are getting high roles in labels, PR firms and radio. Also, I love that artists are more in control of their music than ever. So many independent artists are releasing their own music on their own terms. It's such an exciting time to be an artist.

Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it? I just released my new song "Burn My Baggage". "Burn My Baggage" is definitely on one of the most personal songs I've written. I spent a long time in an abusive friend group. It was really damaging to my self-esteem and I had a lot of trouble trying to move on. Years later I still found myself terrified that new people in my life would treat me like others in my past had. I realized that in order to actually thrive and enjoy life I had to learn to let go of the trauma from my past. It wasn't easy, but that realization was the first real step to a great life. Now I have wonderful friends and a much better outlook. I wrote this song to reflect my journey. The truth is, everyone has something that they'd rather forget, someone or some experience that got under their skin. I really hope that this song can help other people move on and find something better like it did for me.

Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year? Yes! "Burn My Baggage" is the first single to be released off of my upcoming album "DIVINE". I'm so excited about this album. "DIVINE" is all about stepping into your power and learning to love yourself. It chronicles the triumphs and heartbreaks that come with opening yourself up to all that life has to offer. "DIVINE" has been 2 years in the making and I wouldn't trade any of it. I'm so excited to share a piece of my life with my fans.
