Behind the Song
Jaedawn

Jaedawn is a hip-hop artist from Colorado Springs who specializes in melodic rap. He prides himself on producing music with a youthful and innocent outlook on the world. Often tapping into his alter ego, Yunng JD, Jaedawn is known to shift from a close, intimate vibe to a hard-hitting, mosh-pit vibe constantly keeping his fanbase guessing as he takes them on an emotional roller coaster. JD is often praised on his use of melodies, beat selection, and cover art. Jaedawn began writing music in high school in order to express himself emotionally and connect with others. His most recent projects have been Alien (April 2020) and 451 Purity (November 2020). Both of these projects sonically tell the story of an out-casted alien in search of paradise.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
Raw Creative Genuine

What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.
I would definitely say recording. There's something very therapeutic about expressing my thoughts and emotions in the studio and seeing them take form.
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
Honestly, I record and mix everything myself so most of the time I don't really go into it with any ideas. I try to treat it more like an exercise to unload everything that's been on my mind. Sometimes I create something special and other times it's just practice. Regardless, I never see any of it as time wasted.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I am very addicted to YouTube. Any free time I have away from music is spent watching analysis videos whether it's about philosophy, basketball, or even popular media. I just love hearing people talk about whatever they're passionate about.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
I really love how genres are getting blurred and sounds from the past are getting recycled and transformed into something new. As an artist myself, I'm always studying where everything is trending towards.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
I wrote this song called Turbulence a few years ago and I kinda wrote it in the perspective of someone with their sexuality in question. Not to go too deep into it but I wanted to draw the lines that connected homophobia and racism. Basically, indicating that hate is hate no matter what form it takes. And engaging in anything of that sort is setting back the culture of man.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
I'm working on so much right now; music videos, a series of short projects, a YouTube series, lots of stuff lol. And not just my own music, but I'm also part of a collective called Lightening Joy and we're basically all native to Colorado Springs and trying to uplift our community through art. I'm super excited to see everything unfold and be able to share that with everyone here soon.
Tell us where fans can access your music.
Everywhere really! I'm on Apple music, Spotify, YouTube, Soundcloud, etc. All under the name Jaedawn. Also, you can follow me on Instagram @yunngjd for any updates regarding new drops from me and my team!
