HUNTER AND THE WICK'D

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

Hunter and the Wick’d is a Southern California based Americana duo. Its members consist of Virginia native, Miri Hunter and California native, Thom Merrick. After playing together for several years, they released their first recording together. The recording explores country/desert melodies and brings them into a contemporary folk style. There’s a wealth of beautiful music and songs explored on their debut album.

For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!

Soulful, Americana, Inspiring, Eloquent

When you are writing a song, where do you draw inspiration from? Or what topics do you like to sing about?

I like to sing about love, the joy, the bliss, the pain and the hope. And not just love for “the one” person, but love for optimism in humanity. I’d like to think that we could all agree on that goal.....love for each other.

Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?

Thom is a visual artist and I am a playwright and theatre producer....creatives!

Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?

Well, winning best love song for “I Don’t Wanna Tal Right Now” is pretty awesome. But Thom and I recently wrote a song called “Living on the Fringe.” It’s about the conjuring up the strengthen and wisdom to live through this current time. One of my favorite lines from that song:

"I court Lady Luck she knows my real name Lost with the wind, the edge is everything Though my heart is aching I’m ready for anything Tou say I’m living on the fray I sayI’m living on the fringe."

What was the first song or piece you ever wrote!?

Thom and I have been writing separately for years, however, the first song we wrote together is called “Dance Like You’re Falling In Love.” It’s a song about wandering through the desert lost and then becoming at peace with the desert and thriving. The chorus states,

"You gotta dance like you’re falling in love. You can’t hold back, you gotta let go Let tears fall and laughter ring. Heal your soul and let your spirit sing. And just dance like you’re falling in love. We are wounded, feeling under attack on all sides, bringing awareness back to who we are, that brings us back to our humanity."

What is your dream gig? Is there a gig that you really want that would be the ultimate show for you?

To play Stagecoach in Coachella Valley, would be awesome, and so would the Hollywood Bowl.

Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?

Life is a bevy of new material and each day brings new experiences and new insights to past experiences, so yes, Hunter and the Wick’d is constantly working on new material and living life in order to discover/ create music and songs to inspire.
