Estella Dawn
Estella, New Zealand born, US based songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. As a working musician, she writes and records her vocals and piano as well as co-producing all aspects of her music. 2020 was a prolific year for Estella, she released 10 tracks, a new single every 6 weeks, building a steadily growing following that are resonating with her intimate, been there, done that, outlook on life. With this growth, there have been many highs, her song "I Dare You" charted on the media base Radio Top 40 chart, she's been interviewed by and had songs added to many radio stations, her songs have also been included on some big Spotify playlists and she's had many wonderful reviews by global music bloggers. Building on this work, 2021 began strong with Estella's first single 'Petty', then 'Trolls' followed by her most recent single 'Pretty'. What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.
I think my favorite part about being an artist is that I get to do something that I love every day, I feel extremely grateful to do what I do. Holed up in my studio writing and recording music is my happy place
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
As someone who spends 99% of my time recording alone at home in my own studio, things can get a little weird and often a little too introspective. When I write music it's up to me to figure out the melody, the lyrics, and most of the different instrument parts. I really enjoy it but I will admit that sometimes the creative tap doesn't flow as freely as I would like it to. I do work with a producer and engineer that I can bounce ideas off of when I get stuck which is really handy.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing? I love getting out, going to the gym, going to shows, cooking, baking, painting, anything arts and crafty.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
I admire anyone who's doing something creative and making it a viable thing for themselves, it's no small feat putting yourself and your craft out there and trying to make a living from it so anyone that manages to do that deserves a little admiration in my eyes!
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it? Of the songs I've released I think Petty was probably the most emotional to write, I wrote it about the breakdown of a close friendship, which hit me in a different way than any romantic breakup I've ever had. It was a very cathartic process and I definitely shed a few tears along the way but it's also a song that seems to have resonated with people the most. I think that's the really nice part about songwriting, you can hear a song and it can speak to you in such a way that makes you feel heard and less alone and then as the songwriter you in turn feel less alone because people are resonating with the situation you're writing about.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
I have two new singles coming out this year and I'm also recording my first full length album! I'm currently in the process of fleshing out demos for all of the songs (as I'll be the one producing the album, I want to make sure all of the musicians have a good template to work from!) but I'm excited to head into the studio mid October with the band to bring them all to life. We'll be recording a lot of the tracks live so it will have a slightly different feel than my previous work and as someone who spends 99% of my time recording alone I'm really looking forward to working with other creatives. After the record is finished we'll be out promoting it and setting up for a tour.
