Deanna DeMola is a singer-songwriter from Long Island whose music invokes an alternative pop style in her lyrics and performances. Influenced by Billie Eilish, Paramore, FLETCHER and Halsey, her songs address personal and social challenges that she has had to overcome in order to maintain her strength and attain her goals. A few years ago, Deanna began to struggle with depression and anxiety. She felt lost and hopeless, and those feelings only grew over time. Eventually, she found solace in singing and playing music. Music gave her a voice to share her emotions and experiences.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?!
Fresh, passionate, self aware
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?
Songwriting and recording are definitely my favorite part of being an artist. I'm able to really tune into myself and what I'm feeling when I write. It helps calm my mind and it helps me understand what it is that I'm feeling and get it out. And then watching it come alive in the studio is just pure magic in itself.
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
Being in the recording studio feels like home (I have my amazing producer to thank for that). I feel the most at peace and the most like myself when I'm in the vocal booth perfecting a song that was crafted from a simple line, melody, or emotion. It's truly a euphoric feeling. The world feels like it stops for a moment and I can just focus on myself and the song.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I really enjoy going to the gym and exercising. It's a great release to get rid of any negativity or overwhelming thoughts/feelings I might be having. It helps me reset and feel ready to tackle the day ahead.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
I really admire Halsey the most. I've always been a huge fan of her work. I've loved seeing her evolution from a small-town Jersey singer-songwriter into the powerful, commanding, pop artist she is today.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
I have a lot of emotional songs, and each holds such a special place in my life. Whenever I listen to my songs, I'm transported back to that moment in time when I felt whatever I was feeling or whatever I was going through. That's what I really love about songwriting.
Although at the moment, what I was going through represents a different time period in my life, I found that down the line, I could listen to these songs again and still have that same deep emotional connection that I had when I initially wrote the song. It might have a different meaning as I've grown and experienced more in my life, but the core message still always hits home. With that being said, I think the most emotional song I've written is one of the first ones I wrote with my producer/co-writer, Jimmy Greco, "Under Construction." "Under Construction" is a song about struggling with finding yourself and your purpose in life while also learning to be at peace with the journey of self-discovery and being okay with not having it all together.
Jimmy and I wrote this song when I was 18, but no matter what point I'm at in my life, I can listen to this song and it always resonates with me and helps put life in perspective. It's a very grounding song for me.
