Darryl Anders aka AgapéSoul

AgapéSoul is driven by Anders’ singular musical vision to create a positive listening experience. Anders says “The name AgapéSoul comes from the Greek word Agape- meaning God’s unconditional love, and Soul- the place within us where music comes from. It also reflects the style of music I feel most connected to”.

“Nobody But You” ft. Maysa Leak is the title track from the upcoming AgapéSoul EP. It’s a song that reflects the joy of authentic and enduring grown-up love, delivered by one of the greatest voices in both soul and jazz. The music is a vibrant funky and feel-good groove that will have your soul dancing. Maysa transforms the lyric and tells a story that everyone can relate to.

For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!

I would describe my music as Positive, Feel-Good, Universal music. I try to make music that makes people feel good. Not bound by style or genre. The goal is to create something beautiful even in the midst of chaos. To give the listener an escape from the pressures of adulting.

What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.

My favorite part of being an artist is creating. Whether that be the process of writing a new song. From the initial spark of an idea in my head to seeing it develop into a fully produced record or the musical conversation that happens live on stage with musicians in real-time. I live for those moments. It’s liberating!

Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?

In recent years the recording process has changed in that you no longer need to be in the studio at the same time to make music. As Covid proved, you can still make great music remotely. However, when you are in the room together there’s a magic that happens. I love the process of helping a song to become fully realized. It's like taking a pencil sketch and turning it into a beautiful oil painting with vibrant colors that bounce off the canvas and it makes you feel something deeply each time you look at it. That’s the number one goal as a songwriter... to create music the makes the listener feel something.

Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?

When I’m not making music I really enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. I love to laugh and make other people laugh. Also, I enjoy seeing the way people in other countries and cultures live. It is inspiring. It demonstrates that we’re all far more alike than we are different.

Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?

It’s hard to say who I most admire in the music business as there are so many people I admire. I would say that Tommy Sims is someone I really respect and admire as a bass player, songwriter, and producer. As well as being an artist with a distinct voice. I love everything he’s done. His CD “Peace And Love” is quite possibly the best record I’ve ever heard. Also Bluey from Incognito/ Citrus Sun/ STR4TA. He’s been a constant source of inspiration as a writer and producer. He keeps turning out great music at the highest level with influences from around the world. Always fresh always funky!

Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?

I wrote a song called “Tomorrow Comes Too Soon” that I haven’t released yet. It’s about feeling disconnected and longing for acceptance and the fear of running out of time to fix the brokenness. I wrote it 20 years ago and its a very hard song because it’s still very raw. I hope to finally finish it this year.

Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?

I’m always writing. I have a new EP due this summer and hopefully, we’ll be able to do some live shows again. And I’m already working on some new collaborations with other great artists that I respect and admire. I love working with other artists and incorporating their vibe into what I do.
