Behind the Song
Black Heart Saints - Josh Ross
Updated: Aug 6, 2021

With a distinct groove steeped in classic rock and a modern intensity, BlackHeartSaints exploded onto the scene with a bravado that is clearly backed by talent. Their recent studio singles “Lines” and “Misery” from their latest EP Misery (2019) topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Radio Charts in 2019, at #19 and #24, respectively, paving the way for appearances at SXSW, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and serving as the support act for such national artists as Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, Sevendust, Steel Panther, Pop Evil, Buckcherry, Dirty Honey, and more.
Although 2020 proved to be a particularly challenging year for the entire entertainment industry due to the global pandemic and subsequent shutdowns, BlackHeartSaints quickly adapted to the unprecedented conditions by launching a Netflix-style subscription-based video service for fans called BHS TV. The band also partnered with Harley-Davidson and Loop.tv for exclusive streaming performances that captured audiences from all around the world.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
Rock ‘n roll with a little soul.
What is your favorite part about being an artist? Is it songwriting, performing, recording, something else?) Tell us why.
I think it would be all of it. From the songwriting, to recording the track and seeing it come to life, to finally getting the chance to perform it and see how the listeners react to it. It’s a wild journey from the bottom to the top. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be on that ride.
Can you tell us what being in the recording studio is like for you?
Well, this is where the magic happens. Where we find ourselves loving and hating each other, ha! When we hit the studio, we know we are in it for the long haul. We will beat the songs until we have exhausted ourselves completely: mentally, physically, and emotionally. But, the light at the end of the tunnel is always worth it.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
When are we not doing music?! Haha! Music is a lifestyle for us. Let’s be honest: we do what everyone probably can imagine. Late nights at strip clubs, tearing up hotel rooms, and playing solos out on balconies at 4 AM.
Who do you admire most in the music scene today and why?
Dirty Honey has made big waves as an independent band without a label. We’re keen on overseeing every aspect of our careers, so it’s inspiring seeing a band beat the system as we strive to do.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
What a good question, yet one that’s hard to answer since we have a few songs with deep meanings for me. If I had to point one out, it would probably be the song titled “Quicksand,’ which was written in our early days of BlackHeartSaints. This song is kind of the anthem of my life. It’s about finding your purpose in life with the thought that there’s nothing else that can give me a life like this. There is no other way. This is it. Even as tough as it may be or get, that quicksand won’t bring me down; I’ll make sure to reach higher ground.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?

Yes, we have been working hard even with everything coming to a stop this past year. We just released our first single called “Reach the End” from the new EP that’s being released later this year. We will be dropping singles off of that EP, attached with music videos, that will span over a few months. We have tours booked, shows announced, and all kinds of other goodies that can be found at our website at
